Membership Sustainability and DEI Guidelines
Membership Sustainability and DEI Guidelines
CAAM Consortium
Last modified: February 25th, 2022
As a member of CAAM, we draw our strength from the differences of our membership. All of us are committed to a better aviation industry, and that’s our greatest strength. We’ve put together these guidelines to help us all rise to where we want to go.
We use the term “DEI” here as an acronym for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
Purpose
To reinforce CAAM’s commitment to be an environmentally and socially conscious organization that uses its position of leadership to help raise everyone’s effort towards a better future. We believe that this better future is more sustainable, more diverse, more equitable and more inclusive than it is today.
Applicability to Members
All members of CAAM are expected to understand the guidelines laid out in this document as part of their membership.
Non Binding
These guidelines do not create a binding agreement between CAAM and its members and will not be enforceable. Members are expected to observe the guidelines laid out in this document and act in good faith when possible. Members agree that efforts towards the following guidelines promote a better industry for everyone.
Net Zero by 2050
In 2021, the global air transport industry adopted the climate goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050 with signatories to a joint declaration representing the world’s airlines, airports, air traffic management, and the makers of aircraft and engines. This is an ambitious goal requiring everyone in aviation to step up and play a role. As a consortium helping build the future of aviation, CAAM has partnered with The International Civil Aviation Organization’s goal of Net Zero by 2050. Members acknowledge this goal of net zero aviation emissions and understand their role making Net Zero a reality before 2050.
Understanding Equity
Equity is the effort to provide different levels of support based on an individual’s or group’s needs in order to achieve fairness in outcomes. Working to achieve equity acknowledges unequal starting places and the need to correct the imbalance.
As a member of CAAM and a leader within your organization, you acknowledge that equity challenges exist within the aviation industry and that your organization plays a role in perpetuating or challenging barriers to equity within the aviation sector, such as women, and the people with whom aviation serves, such as indigenous communities and other visible minorities.
Understanding Diversity
Diversity is the presence of difference within a given group of individuals. Differences typically refer to identity like race and gender, and sometimes ethnicity, religion, nationality, or sexual orientation.
As a member of CAAM and a leader within your organization, you recognize that a diverse and inclusive environment which values diversity of thought, background, skills and experience facilitates a broader exchange of perspectives. You also recognize that diversity is a key driver of the innovation necessary for the aviation industry of tomorrow.
Understanding Inclusion
Inclusion is a state of belonging, when persons of different backgrounds and identities are valued, integrated, and welcomed equitably as decision-makers and collaborators. You can have a diverse team of talent, but that doesn’t mean they feel welcomed or valued or are given opportunities to grow.
As a member of CAAM and a leader within your organization, you acknowledge that the language you use has an impact on a person’s feeling of safety and inclusion in your organization.
No Responsibility
CAAM and its directors or employees take no responsibility for the negligence of any of its members in actions that may deviate from these guidelines. CAAM may, at their discretion, raise concerns with an organization’s leadership regarding these guidelines if noted. We encourage all parties noting gaps in these commitments to respectfully raise their concerns to the organization’s leaders when possible. Doing so creates an opportunity for us all to rise and build a better industry.
